a frantic night for firecrews in san jose. >> several fires erupt at the same time, all in the same park. i'm carolyn johnson.n. >> and i'm dan ashley. it is happening at kelly park near roberts and keys avenues. lisa amin with wha is live with what is happening as we speak. lisa? >> dan, we are here at kelly park, as you mentioned, but to give you an idea where it is, it is behind happy hollow park, southeast of downtown san jose. and right now firefighters are fighting two fires at the same time. one is east of where i am

standing near the creek. the other is due north right over there, very close to story road. the fire started before 9:00. 40 to 50 firefighters rushed to kelly park to fight what was originally called in as three separate fires within 500 to 600 feet of one another. the fires traveled along guadeloupe creek. crews managed to get uh hold of them within an hour, but they are not completely out. no structures or homes were threatened, but it is not the fears time crews rushedrk. kelly park. those who live nearby blame the fires on the homeless. >> there were three fires yesterday, and i guess one or two today. hat are you concernednd more. cd about though? >> our apartment complex or condo is on the other side of kelly park. a lot of time the smoke blows that way. and it draws the fire over that way. >> homeless encampments are a

problem in the creek area. but it is too early to make a determination that it is a homeless encampment. there is no way to make that determination. it could be accidental for some unknown reason and it could be intentional. at this point it is just too early to say. >> there were fires in this park over the weekend. arson investigators are out here looking for clues and interviewing witne they are they are not ruling anything out. back here live, and a lot of crews have left for the evening, and firefighters will be staying out here through the night and keeping an eye on hotspots. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> thank you, lisa. and our hot, dry weather creates prime conditions for fires like those. let's check in now with sandhya patel for a look at today's highs. sandhya? >> it was a toasty 101 in livermore. 98 in a n tee jobing. in antioch. fairfield is flirting with a hundred at 99. 100 in cloverdale and ukiah. it was hot in santa rosa and

92 and same thing for san rafael. san jose up to 88. as you notice right around the bay and the coastline we did see warmer conditions, but the fog and the sea breeze tempered your warm up. 58 in half moon bay and 68 in san francisco. oakland got up to 76 degrees. the fire danger remains high, especially over the higher elevations. to nate we are not expecting much in the way of overnight humidity recovery. we will see fire concerns above the marine layer. tomorrow is only going to get hotter. i will have a full look at the forecast of the. >> see you then. breaking news out of oakland. police are investigating a homicide near the oakland coliseum. they tell abc news a 15-year-old boy was shot around 8:00 on the 6700 block of leonna creek drive. he was taken to a nearby hospital, but he did not survive his injuries. a san jose elementary school principal surrendered to police after she was

criminally charged with failing to report the molestation of an eight-year-old girl. she is accused of not notifying police the first time a paisht paisht -- a parent raised suspicions at wailly elementary school. it is a story we have been covering since january when one of the teachers was arrested for molestation. 5* total of five families have stepped forward claiming their daughters were monthly lessed by -- molested by teacher craig chandler. they also may have let a key piece of evidence be destroyed, a jacket with a suspicious stain. >> the principal returned the jacket to the parent thinking it was nothing. the jack wet was -- the jacket was washed and any evidence now gone. >> the statement says that the child's parents and the school district who were all aware of the teacher's conduct had no way of knowinct was the conducts of a sexual nature. a mountain view man turned himself into police in connection with a deadly

pedestrian accident. he is charged with one count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. the crash happened nearly three weeks ago. police believe he was speeding when he ran a red light in his audi near california street and escuela and ended up on the sidewalk. he was waiting for the bus when he was run over by that car. he died at the scene. >> a battle between a dwindling species of bird and an expanding group of humans. the google employee. alan wang is live at mountain view city hall tonight where, alan, the council just voted in favor of nesting over housing. >> they did, dan. both groups claim to be on the side of the environment, but tonight the council voted overwhelmingly to prevent the dense housing in the north bay shore area. the north bay shore area is home to several dwindling species, including the owl that lives in gopher holes.

this could be prime living space for google employees and an expanding group that will walk away from google headquarters. >> if we can provide an option to get a little closer so they can take their bike or simply walk, it will be great for then viern mint and great for traffic in the bay area. >> the plan would layout the city's blueprint through 2030 and part of it includes the potential development of an 1100 unit apartment complex. button vairn mental lists say -- but environmentalists say it will eradicate the owl. the santa clara autobon society says there are only three places you can seat burrowing owl. >> they can build houses across 101. it is a 10-minute walk. there is a footbridge they just completed. it is not that far. the housing is needed right at general plan. and then then wak >> but it is a general plan.

the details can ban pets and limit vehicles later. jay these are people that can travel around without renting a car. city you can get a city car or zip car if they needed one. it is a model for future future for us and for other cities. >> google conceded there are other places to build apartments in mountain view, but they won't be able to build on the north bay shore area that they own. again, city council voted tonight not to allow residential housing in the north bay shore area. reporting live in mountain view, alan wang, abc7 news. >> alan, thank you. in contra costa county, the cause of a 12-acre fire that tied up the evening commute for many bay area drivers is under investigation tonight. sky 7hd was over this grass fire burning along highat will 4 at willow pass road in bay point. we believe those are piles of lumber burning in the middle of the field. the fire broke out around 5:00 this evening and forced the clough is sure of all westbound lanes of highway 4 until crews could get this fire under control.

no homes were threatened, and no one was injured. in northern california two fires burning out of control have spread across 17,000 acres. the worst are burning in the mendocino national forest. the mills fire scorched 13,000 acres and counting. crews are facing very high temperatures there, but the lack of wind and 50% humidity is helping firefighters. ranchers in the area say they are amazed that so far not a single property has been lost. how better has been re-- power has been restored after an outage forced it to close. sky 7hd was overhead. the outage knocked out power to more than 7,000 pg&e customers in downtown berkeley. bart closed the station because there was no power to keep the lights on underground. you can see all of these commuters standing outside looking for a way to get home. trains bypassed the station and berkeley riders were bussed to other nearby bart stations. it could be the end of a free ride for a world war ii

the college of san francisco has to begin fixing some financial mismanagement. the board of trustees told a packed house that it is working to keep city college alive. johnal stone is there live for us -- john alston is live for us. >> they say it is unlikely that city college would close, but the interim chancellor said city college, the largest in the state is in trouble. >> and we take it seriously because it is in fact very, very serious. >> the interim chancellor is talking about the city college of san francisco. now at risk of losing accreditation and possibly closing if the board doesn't

fix some serious problems fast. >> what has y'all been really doing? look where we are at in this situation. we shouldn't be in this situation first of all. second of all, you guys are talking about all of these words and beautiful things you say, but actions speak louder than words. >> the state accreditation commission says city college has been falling down on-the-job. problems like leadership weaknesses at every level. failure to react to on going reduced funding and spending a higher than average 92% of its budget on salaries and benefits. the commission came under fire. >> i would just like to say shame on the accreditation committee. i don't want anymore administrators at my school. i want my teachers to be paid better with better benefits. >> 90,000 students attend city college while trying to address the problems in the report, the board has to consider a shutdown of total shf the school. >> the plan is designed as a kind of insurance for students. but in a worst case scenario they will be taken care of. they will be allowed to finish

programs and credits. >> they already have a task force on how the college is run. they have to show progress by october and prove the issues are fixed by march. >> will there be accountability for the predicament you are in right now? >> sure, we will take responsibility for it for sure. >> what does that mean? >> the buck stops here. if we fail, it is our fault, but we are not going to fail. >> the state cut $17 million from city college, and it could lose another 11 million if the november tax initiative fails. the trustees placed a $79 parcel tax on the san francisco ballot this fall to generate some money. live at city college, john alston, abc news. >> thank you. san bernadino tonight was the third california city to declare bankruptcy in the past month. facing a $45 million deficit, city council voted to seek chapter 9 protection from

creditors. mammoth lakes filed bankruptcy and stockton lake last month. they were the largest city to seek bankruptcy protection. in southern california a middle school teacher wanted on child sex abuse charges lead police on a wild pursuit. look at this. there he goes. that's the pe teacher behind the wheel of that black pick up truck. the chase through los angeles county came to a brief stop in torrance when the officer hit a truck causing it to spin and crash. there you can see it go into the side of the big rig. that did not stop the driver. he took off again, and seven miles later his pick up went off the road and over an embankment and into a tree. the wanted teacher was taken to a local hospital under police custody. a common barbecue tool nearly caused a tacoma, washington man his life. and the centers for disease control is issuing a heads up. 31-year-old adam experienced stomach pain so severe he went

confined to the coastline. as you look live doppler 7hd you can see where the fog is sitting. pacifica got up to 57. livermore was 101 degrees. more than 40-degree spread between the coast and inland, and that's where we are heading. we do have our own live doppler 7hd. it is tracking any weather changes coming your way. and there are changes coming in the form of hotter weather tomorrow. numbers right now are still on the warm side. 71 in concord and 84 in antioch right now. that looks like a high. 75 in livermore. it is 70 in san rafael. that is not a typo. it is very warm. 50s, 60s elsewhere. here is the visibility. looks great in most of the bay area with clear skies, but not along the coast. the fog in half moon bay reduced visibility to a mile. it could be dense for the morning commute. the coastal fog, hotter inland tomorrow. it is going to be the third

spare the air of the summer for your wednesday. here is the hot air mass that will stick around a for a couple days. this high-pressure system sits here and it is not just in the bay area, but around the state as well. we will call it hot days for your wednesday and thursday. but enough of a sea breeze is coming in earlier that the temperatures will begin to trend lower. speaking of trending lower, not going to cool off much. tomorrow morning, short sleeve weather in the inland east bay. low to mid60s. really mild conditions and clear. along the coastline, you will have the fog around. as i mentioned, could be patches that are dense. give yourself extra time for the commute. low 50s along the coast. spare the air for your wednesday. poor air quality inland east bay. santa clara valley, moderate air quality for the south bay and north bay coast with enough of a sea breeze keeping you in the good air quality mode. here are your highs for your wednesday. in the south bay, a hot 98-degree day in los gatos. 96 in saratoga.

santa clara, sunnyvale, on the peninsula it is a warmer day. 90 in redwood city. 92 for loss altos. millbrae, 79. mid60s along the coastline. 64 in pacifica. you will still see a few patches of fog along the sunset district. 65 degrees. 72 in downtown san francisco. these temperatures are running higher than where they should be this time of year. but we have the microclimates climates in the summertime. up to 96 in santa rosa. 100 degrees in calistoga. east bay 80 in oakland and 87 for you in castro valley inland areas were cooking. 105 brentwood and 80 in santa cruz and up to 100 inland in morgan hill. accu-weather seven-day forecast, spare the air tomorrow, hot inland the next couple days with triple digits, 60s coast side. cooling begins on thursday. much cooler by the weekend. 80s inland and sictz coast side. 60s coast side. they are tracking all of the hot weather, carolyn and dan. >> thanks, sandhya.

headed to rome with 177 passengers on board. it was forced to land in philadelphia where it was met with emergency crews. flight attendants smelled something in the cabin and felt ill. no word on what it was. five crew members taken to the hospital to be checked out. and just a few hours before, a terrifying flight from aruba to miami. just about 30 minutes from landing the american airlines plane was hit by 15 seconds of
